Rack Em Up: 4 Precautions To Keep Your Pallet Racks Safe And Secure

If you're going to be installing pallet racks in your industrial warehouse, you'll need to take steps to ensure the safety of yourself and others. While proper installation is crucial, it's not the only step you'll need to take to keep things safe and secure. Here are four additional steps you should take to make sure that your employees are safe around the pallet racks.

Choose the Right Racks

When choosing pallet racks, it's important to remember that not all racks are the same. Pallet racks are designed for specific loads, which means you'll need to choose a pallet rack system that is designed for your specific requirements. Pay particular attention to weight restrictions. This will help ensure that you choose pallet racks that will withstand the weight you're placing on them.

Defend the End Zone

When it comes to protecting your pallet racks, the end zone is the most important area. One hit from a fork lift can spell disaster if the hit happens at the corner or end of a pallet rack. To prevent collapse, install post protectors or steel guardrails around the ends and corners of your pallet racks. These protective devices will help prevent accidental damage to your rack systems.

Inspect Often

Your pallet racks will be put together using nuts and bolts, Unfortunately, those nuts and bolts can work loose over time. Once they're loose, they'll no longer be able to maintain the structural integrity of your rack system. To prevent collapse, be sure to inspect your rack system at least once a month. Tighten loose nuts and bolts, and replace missing hardware as soon as you discover a problem. You should also inspect the rack rails for damage. If you discover damaged railing, the rack should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

Keep Things Square

When placing pallets on the racks, it's important that you train your forklift drivers to place the load squarely. This means that the pallets should be set down on the rack with an even amount of overhang on each side. The pallet should not be set down at an angle. Setting the pallet down at an angle, or allowing an uneven amount of overhang, could make the load unstable. If that happens, the weight will be distributed unevenly and the pallet rack could collapse.

If you're going to have pallet racks in your warehouse, be sure you follow safety precautions. The safety suggestions provided here will help ensure that your pallet rack is safe and secure.

About Me

Improving My Workplace

When I started working in my dad's workshop, I could tell that a few of the safety protocols were out of date. In addition to working with older equipment, some of the guys didn't take safety as seriously as they should have. I talked with my dad, and he decided to upgrade a few of the pieces of industrial equipment. It was amazing to see the difference that new machinery made. Within a few days, accident rates were down and employee morale was up. This website is all about installing new equipment that can help your employees to stay safer.
